Duvernay Ex Machina: From Overlooked to Opportunity
Outside of Kaybob, the Duvernay spent much of the past decade out of favour with E&Ps and investors alike. Why? Carbonate content, reservoir segmentation, unusual stress regimes, and thermal maturity issues branded parts of the play as "tier-2" early on—a reputation that ultimately stuck until recently. In the past few years, we've seen a resurgence in both Willesden Green and the greater West Shale Basin outside of Kaybob.
Thematically, we’ll explore how completion designs and efficiencies have evolved in the Duvernay and other historically non-core unconventional plays through the lens of Novi's machine-learning tools.
Topics We’ll Cover:
- Machine Learning Derived Completion Scores: What they mean, how we use them.
- Case Studies in the Lower-48: How have completion designs evolved other, historically non-core conventional plays?
- Case Studies in the Duvernay: How can we apply these tools to the Duvernay?

Speaker Bio
Brandon Myers
Head of Research, Novi
Brandon’s expertise lies at the intersection of data science, energy finance, and petrophysics, cultivated since 2015 when he began his career at a micro-cap E&P startup in Calgary, Alberta. Here, he spearheaded an effort to map out and acquire assets, notably across the Harmattan East Viking field.
Transitioning to Houston, Texas, Brandon joined Wood Mackenzie, where he integrated petrophysical and geological insights into economic analyses across the Lower 48. Over six years, he garnered expertise encompassing every unconventional play across North America.
In 2022, Brandon brought his extensive knowledge to Calgary based Peters & Co., serving as an in-house subject matter expert. His role focused on U.S. unconventional plays and emerging technologies such as lithium brine extraction, helium exploration, hydrogen, and renewables.
Currently, as Head of Research at Novi, Brandon drives the development of a pioneering machine learning-centric research platform for E&P’s and financial services firms. This platform empowers the upstream industry with state-of-the-art, data-driven insights, backed by Novi’s best in class machine learning platform and upstream data.
