Heating Up: Closed-Loop Geothermal Production Forecasting
Geothermal energy currently accounts for less than 1% of the global energy supply, but it is forecasted to meet up to 15% of energy requirements by 2050. As geothermal energy grows within Canada and globally, there is an increased need for accurate production forecasting methods and standardized reserves estimation techniques. Current geothermal practices often rely on adapting methodologies from other industries or using international frameworks. Closed-loop geothermal systems, a next-generation geothermal technology, are poised to contribute to global energy supplies due to their sustainable, scalable, predictable, and baseload nature. Thermal production for closed-loop systems can be accurately modelled using analytical methods and numerical simulations to predict operations and project deliverability. Proven forecasting methods for closed-loop geothermal systems are critical to evaluating project feasibility and enabling informed decision-making for stakeholders.
