Screening the Duvernay Formation: Integrating Laboratory and Field Investigation

This presentation reviews the results of rock-fluid experiments conducted on in-situ samples from various parts of the Duvernay Formation at the University of Alberta over the last decade. It also reviews the relationship between productivity and completion intensity of the wells across the basin. A unique Key Performance Driver (KPD) type curve was identified, linking the normalized performance of Duvernay wells to the Oil Wettability Index (WIo). This curve explains why wells with similar completion designs and intensities exhibit significant differences in productivity, enabling the classification of Duvernay wells into Tier 1 and Tier 2 categories.

 

To validate these field observations, laboratory experiments were performed using a state-of-the-art visualization cell to simulate the primary production of core samples from Tier 1 and Tier 2 wells. Videos of primary production demonstrate a strong correlation between oil productivity and WIo, which is well-aligned with rock-eval parameters, including thermal maturity and productivity index.

 

The presentation concludes by discussing recent core-scale enhanced oil recovery (EOR) experiments on Duvernay and Montney cores, using screened surfactants and solvents to optimize production.

    Hassan Dehghanpour, PhD

    School of Petroleum Engineering, University of Alberta

     

    Hassan Dehghanpour is a professor, Senior Engineering Research Chair, and Co-director of the School of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta. His research centers on measuring and modeling transport phenomena for unconventional rock characterization and enhanced oil recovery. He has supervised over 20 PhD dissertations and MSc theses focused on characterizing Montney and Duvernay wells.

     

    With more than 180 published papers, he has received numerous honors from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), including the 2024 Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award (Canada Region) and serving as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer during the 2019–20 season. He is a member of the SPE Reservoir Advisory Committee and an associate editor for the SPE Journal and the Journal of Geoenergy Science and Engineering. Hassan earned his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
