Detection and Quantification of Methane Emissions from O&G Wells in AB & BC

Detection and Quantification of Methane Emissions from O&G Wells in AB & BC

Over 70% of Canada’s oil and gas wells—about 470,000 sites—are no longer producing and emit methane. Groundbased measurements collected since 2018 show emission rates spanning more than ten orders of magnitude, from negative fluxes to tens of kg/hr. These methods quantify emissions reliably but cannot be deployed at every well, whereas helicopter surveys offer broad coverage but miss many low emitters.

Using component-level ground measurements from 378 wells, we established the empirical basis for evaluating emission distributions and detection thresholds across nonproducing wells. Building on this completed work, we will conduct coordinated ground and aerial measurements in 2026 to refine helicopter detection limits and estimate the proportion of wells emitting methane at higher rates (>10 g/hr). Current and forward research campaigns are designed to strengthen and extend the insights derived from our existing dataset.

  • Speaker Bio

    Gloria Ding

Masters Student, Subsurface Hydrology and Environmental Analysis Laboratory, McGill University

Gloria is a master’s student in the Subsurface Hydrology and Environmental Analysis Laboratory (SHEAL), working under Professor Mary Kang at McGill University, where she also completed her B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering. Her research focuses on understanding the environmental impacts of the energy sector, with current work on multi‑scale emissions detection and quantification from non‑producing oil and gas wells in Alberta and British Columbia. She began her research with the lab in Winter 2023 and has since worked on methane emissions from hydrogen blending in natural gas systems, post‑meter natural gas emissions, and research on non‑producing oil and gas wells across North and South America. Outside of her academic work, Gloria enjoys reading and developing her knitting and sewing skills.

  • Tiered Pricing

We are rolling out a new tiered pricing structure for all upcoming Calgary Section Technical Luncheons. This updated approach allows us to offer lower prices for SPE Members while ensuring continued value for non-members. The new system includes three pricing tiers, with a limited number of Tier 1 and Tier 2 tickets available to encourage and reward early registration. We hope this creates more flexibility and choice for everyone attending our events. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact us at calgarysection@spe.org.
