Hydrogen: The Next Big Opportunity in the Energy Industry

When it comes to energy, the world is ready for a change—at the very least, a shift toward more diverse sources. Cleaner options are preferable. The global trend is clear: we are electrifying more aspects of our daily lives. Currently, oil and gas are the most dominant and reliable sources. However, we must acknowledge their environmental impact.

Renewable energy alternatives each have their challenges. Solar and wind can be unreliable, particularly in the northern hemisphere. Hydropower is dependable but not always regionally available, and its impact on wildlife has led to it being delisted from Europe’s clean energy classification. Nuclear energy is another reliable option, but it comes with its own set of concerns.

Hydrogen is emerging as a strong contender—a clean energy carrier with the potential to replace oil and gas. Its versatility allows it to be produced in various ways, depending on locally available resources. However, despite its high potential, hydrogen still faces significant challenges in scaling up its supply and demand. The "chicken-and-egg" dilemma—where infrastructure development and market adoption must grow simultaneously—remains a barrier to widespread hydrogen deployment.

In this Business Breakfast Series, the discussion will be focused on the emerging hydrogen industry, covering key topics such as supply and demand, advancing hydrogen technologies, and public’s hydrogen safety concerns.

The time to invest in hydrogen is now. While North America lags behind Europe, Canada has already made its mark in the sector significantly. Companies like Ballard Power Systems in British Columbia have been pioneers in fuel cell technology, while Quebec’s Hydroma is advancing its natural hydrogen production in Mali, West Africa. Calgary is also home to promising hydrogen startups on the brink of major breakthroughs.

Hydrogen represents a vital piece of the future energy puzzle—it is a critical piece of the future energy landscape. It is important for us in the oil and gas industry to branch out and help accelerate its adoption and unlock its full potential.

    Januar Wirawan

Holding a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University, Januar Wirawan had a career in the oil and gas industry that spanned over 20+ years. His expertise encompasses Reservoir Engineering, Development Engineering, and Reserves Engineering, which covers dry gas to heavy oil assets, conventional and unconventional, onshore and offshore. In 2021, he shifted his focus following his passion for hydrogen when he joined Proton Technologies (now Proton H2) where he has been utilizing his experience to help move the technology forward.

On the side, he is the founding member of Hydrogen Technical Section (H2TS) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and its first Membership Chair. He is also collaborating with SAGA Wisdom, an online training provider, in spreading the knowledge of hydrogen in the form of “Hydrogen 101” course. He had written numerous hydrogen articles in LinkedIn and SPE’s The Way Ahead.
