Reducing Lift Gas Requirements in Montney & Duvernay Wells with PAGL/GAPL
In the Montney and Duvernay, many horizontal shale wells rely on lift gas to keep producing. But as rates fall, these wells often drift into an inefficient regime where each incremental barrel of liquid requires more injected lift gas than the last. This materially affects project economics due to higher recycled lift gas volumes tie up compression horsepower and occupies pipeline and facility capacity that could otherwise move sellable gas. Hybrid systems such as Plunger Assisted Gas Lift (PAGL) and Gas Assisted Plunger Lift (GAPL), which are well proven in US unconventional plays, offer a good alternative. By adding a plunger to stabilize unloading and restore pressure differential, wells can move more liquid with markedly less lift gas, improving both production decline and project economics.
This talk will walk through a physics based, field tested workflow for applying PAGL/GAPL in horizontal shale wells. It will show how to identify when a well has become gas rate limited and how to redesign the gas lift valves to better enable intermittent lift. Clint will also demonstrate how cycle level data, rather than averages, can be used to control plunger arrival timing and injection strategy in a way that protects orifice ΔP and reduces lift gas requirements.

Clint Mason
President, Kaizen Well Solutions (Alberta)
Clint Mason is the President of Kaizen Well Solutions (Alberta), specializing in advanced plunger lift and gas lift systems for unconventional wells. He brings nearly 40 years of practical field experience, equipment design improvements, and physics-based diagnostics, using cycle analytics and reliability driven hardware to maximize uptime, improve liquid recovery, and extend well life, particularly in long lateral wells. Clint also develops operator training content with clear, accessible visuals and delivers in person courses on lift selection, controller strategy, and field troubleshooting. Beyond day-to-day operations, he writes data driven articles on Canadian energy economics and other topical Canadian issues on his “Beyond the Barrel” Substack.
