The Effect of Extending Lateral Length - A Williston Basin Case Study

Operators continue to look for ways to improve the economics of their lower quality assets - Tier 2 and Tier 3.  The latest trend in the Tier 2 assets in the North Dakota Williston Basin is to increase the lateral length from 10,000 ft to 15,000 ft.  Proponents argue that the increased lateral lengths offer a cost-effective increase in recovery efficiency.  Critics raise concerns about operational complexities and deteriorating productivity per foot.  This case study will review the history of the 15,000 ft laterals in Williams County, identify the drilling and completion designs, and determine the productivity of the increased lateral length.
