The Interplay of Well Spacing and Economics

The Interplay of Well Spacing and Economics

Determining the economically optimal development strategy for unconventional assets requires balancing well spacing, depletion effects, and completion design within a highly coupled system. Traditional workflows often treat these elements independently, leading to inconsistent recommendations and missed value. This work introduces an integrated approach that quantifies three-dimensional well spacing, explicitly accounts for depletion, and normalizes completion and operational variables using a trained neural network. By combining reservoir engineering principles with basin-scale data and fully coupled economics, the workflow enables rapid evaluation of development scenarios at the DSU level. The result is a consistent, data-driven framework that translates spacing and depletion decisions directly into performance forecasts and economic outcomes, allowing operators to identify value-maximizing development plans in minutes rather than weeks.
