Understanding and Mitigating Drillstring Harmonics
Drillstring harmonics – often discussed but rarely understood – can drive damaging downhole dysfunctions such as stick slip, whirl, and HFTO. This presentation will cover the fundamentals of string harmonics, with easy-to-understand explanations followed by real world case studies utilizing high frequency downhole data. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to recognize harmonic-induced dysfunction, select appropriate mitigation strategies, and apply these learnings to both automated and conventional rigs to improve drilling consistency, performance, and tool life. This presentation will be based on the material presented at the Banff D&C workshop this spring, with additional insights from the recently published paper, SPE-227939-MS.

Speaker Bio
David Forrest, P.Eng.
Manager, Drilling Engineering, Precision Drilling Corp.
David earned a B.A.Sc. in Geological Engineering from the University of Waterloo before establishing his career in Calgary, specializing in drilling mechanics and optimization. He has extensive experience analyzing high frequency downhole data, as well as managing the implementation of new rig automation technologies. David is known for his engaging presentations that distill complex topics into easily understood concepts.
